he Valdelosfrailes Winery is located in the municipality of Cubillas de Santa Marta, in the province of Valladolid, and belongs to the emerging D.O. Cigales of red wines. Its excellent facilities are surrounded by carefully-tended vineyards that mainly produce the area’s main grape variety, Tempranillo or Tinto Fino. The extraordinary 1999 harvest provided the raw material for the first wines launched onto the market.
The origin of Valdelosfrailes as a winery stems from the winemaking tradition of Carlos Moro’s family, who for many years have been cultivating vines and making wine in the traditional manner in the areas of Cubillas de Santa Marta and Valoria la Buena. They specialised in making exceptional “claretes” until in 1998 Carlos Moro decided to bank on renewal, producing new red wines in the area.
The satisfactory experience of creating and developing the Matarromera and Emina wineries in Ribera del Duero has been a great incentive for the winemaking group to enter the Cigales area, creating the Valdelosfrailes winery with the same aim of creating wines which that will be known internationally for their quality and personality.
The Valdelosfrailes Winery was founded in 1999, undertaking an ambitious investment plan to size the winery appropriately and have its own vineyards for production.
The winery has 90 hectares of vineyards located in the municipalities of Cubillas de Santa Marta and Valoria la Buena which are overseen and cared for by their technicians throughout the entire process of grape development.
The soil consists of tertiary and quaternary sediments: sand, limestone and gypsiferous clay, resting on clay and marl. The soil has a weak granular structure, fine or medium, with few stones, and sometimes with sand and gravel: it is therefore sandy clay loam, very suitable for growing vines on deep, well-drained soils with variable humidity according the part of the plot. The finest cultivation techniques and harvest selections are carried out to obtain the best quality of raw material.
The combination of these two elements, climate and soil, along with the painstaking care of the vineyards, results in high-quality grapes, although the main protagonist is the Tempranillo variety itself.
